NORTH COVENTRY — A Chester County man has died after he tried to light a cigarette using a medical oxygen generator, authorities said.

On June 17, at 9:14 a.m., the North Coventry Township Police were dispatched to a residence on Mt. Zion Avenue for a man who was injured by fire from a medical oxygen generator. Upon arrival, medics from Goodwill Ambulance were on the scene performing CPR on the male victim.

Police were advised that the man was attempting to light a cigarette while wearing a nasal cannula for oxygen, causing an oxygen-induced flame, and injuring the man. The victim was transported to the Pottstown Hospital by Goodwill Ambulance.

Police were notified later that morning by the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office that the man, not identified by authorities, succumbed to his injuries.

Assisting at the scene were Goodwill Ambulance, Norco Fire Company, and the North Coventry Township Fire Marshal.
